OT, sorry: Anybody know anything about 1969 Cutlass Supremes?

Sorry for the OT topic but I am looking to buy one for my brother and I found a guy with a '1969 Cutlass w/ 425 big block'. You guys seem to be the most mechanically inclined so I didn;t want to waste my time in 'Other Cars'.

Did these things come with 425s? If not, what did they have? 350s and 400s?

What is an Olds 425 capable of?

Thanks

455 big block (might have had 425 horse) and as with any engine, sink enough $ into it and it will go fast.  Check any parts suppliers catalog or web site to see how much parts are.  I think they will be much higher then any Chevy parts.

But I love Olds 442's and want one to add to my collection.  Of course my collection consists of 1 Vette but it's a start.

I built an olds engine.... '76 350 quot;rocket blockquot;

very strong, and durable, amazing performance if setup right....ran it as a daily driver in an '81 regal for 10 years..and its still running today(sold to a friends Dad)

expensive parts though, and harder to find.......
so be aware...I would expect big block to run even higher $$...
I would buy a '69 in a heartbeat though...

I read somewhere that 88s, 98s and Toronados had 425CI engines, distinct from the 455CI.

They're nice cars, I just want to know what i am buying.

Superfast I think your right but I think it was an early/mid sixties engine and I am pretty sure the 455 was around in 69.  Could be a transplant though.

You are right, it would have come from the factory with either a 350 or 400. Olds had a 425 in their large cars, superceded by the 455 in (i think) 1969, but it wasn't offered in Cutlasses.  It was a torquey motor, and could be made to perform.  Until 1970, only the Hurst Olds Cutlass came with a 455, and they are very rare birds.  Check out /lt;a hrcf=quot;agt; for all the Olds info you need and then some.  Joe

I would check with catalog suppliers that work with Chevelles as well.

I had a 455 in a 73  Ninety Eight and I put a cam and headers in it.  That thing would lay patch you would not believe.  It would burn the tire from a stand still, no water, bleach etc, and it would keep burning through the 1st to 2nd gear shift and keep going.  I had to shut it down cuz I ran out of parking lot.  I brake torqued one time and lost site of the car next to me.  When I saw the guys face it again I thought he crapped his pants.  That was fun!

Cutlasses weren't available with 425s.  GM had a mandate up until '70 that no 'passenger' car would have more than 400 cubes.  This was to keep competition from the 427 corvette.  This is why you had 400 Firebirds and GTOs, and 396 Camaros and Chevelles.  The 442 in 69 had a 400.  Cutlasses were limited to 350s.  Hurst made a few 442 HOs with 455s, and of course there were some sneak-through COPO Camaros and Chevelles with 427s, but those are rare.

The BB Olds is a torque beast!  A 2bbl 9.0:1 455 is good for 500 lb-ft.  Don't expect it to rev though.  The heads run out of steam at around 4500.  Still, the Olds is one of the most 'fun' motors to drive.

1967 was the last year for the Olds 425 cu in engine.  It was available in the bigger cars - Delmonts, 98s and Toronados.  It was rated at 365 hp and 385 hp in Toronados.  You could not get this engine in an A body.  The '69 Cutlass typically came with a 350 although a 6 cyl was available.

That '69 Cutlass Supreme is a nice car.  I briefly owned one with a factory 4 speed - rare option.

My wife and I really like the Olds A bodies from that era.  Her cruiser is a '70 442 W-30 4 speed.  It's a real one, F heads, ram air, etc.  Now if I could only get her to let me drive it once in a while...

The 442 in 69 had a 400.  Cutlasses were limited to 350s.  Hurst made a few 442 HOs with 455s, and of course there were some sneak-through COPO Camaros and Chevelles with 427s, but those are rare.

That's right.  '68-'69 442s had a BB 400 and the Hurst Olds had a worked 455 Toronado engine.

I drool over my Dad's '68 442 everytime I stop over :p:

400 was the GM policy limit for MID size which is why the GTO got the 389 instead of the 421 amp; why Duntov was working on a 400 SB.
